Barbara Allen

Barbara Allen: The following is excerpted from a summer reading assignment: "Most of you love young adult fiction--novels like The Hunger Games, Maze Runner, or older examples like Twilight and Harry Potter. Those novels are fun to read, and they are great books; however, they are not important." I had a complicated emotional response to this, but I'm curious what you think, especially teachers and lit friends.

ALA Library

ALA Library: Pairing Books And Tabletop Games | The Hub     This year while attending PAX East, Penny Arcade’s annual gaming convention in Boston, I started thinking about how certain games would be perfect for the fans of certain books. Some are obvious and intentional. More and more tabletop games are being created based on books or series, though often only after the books have been made into a movie or TV series. Recent examples include Harry Potter (which has spawned several board games including Hogwarts: House Cup Challenge), The Hunger Games, Twilight, The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and The Walking Dead. In preparing this post, I even discovered that there is a Princess Bride board game.

Rachel Leah Duecaster

Rachel Leah Duecaster: The Last Psychiatrist: What's Wrong With The Hunger Games Is What No One Noticed     I was linked to this site for a more recent posting concerning the Dove ads, but not having the pity-party energy to discuss whether my body image and my psyche (regardless of advertising) exceed, barely meet, or utterly fail reality, I clicked over to this post.

Disclaimer: I've never read the books, so some of this could be true. What I did do was watch the movie, thanks to my boyfriend. Review of story is entirely based on it.

What I'm here to complain about is the ranty language in which someone wants to bitch about a character without taking the broader context of a story into account: namely, that Katniss is a strong-willed individual surrounded by much more powerful entities who have their own agendas, and thus of FUCKING COURSE choices are going to be removed from her - and anyone else who had caught their attention - in order for them to manipulate events as they saw fit.

A well-composed story of length has plots moving within plots, and puts a character in a wider scheme - especially hero characters who have to move out of their tiny sphere into something much larger than themselves. It's fucking ridiculous to cry that she didn't make any choices. She did - she chose to survive as best she could and not to kill. She attempted to make other choices and was diverted off of them by people who had to make their own choices. If the books are anything like the script writing, then the author should be commended for including the string-pulling agencies who use the power they have.

If you want to complain about a shitty point of this whole series, complain about the utterly ridiculous premise that some time in a dystopian future, we would send kids to kill each other and everyone would be complacent enough about it to allow it to happen.

Jim'll Paint It

Jim'll Paint It: Back to basics challenge

For this week and this week only I am imposing a rule on the painting requests. The challenge is to come up with a request using no more than 5 words. It has been said that the suggestions are becoming almost formulaic in their randomness and I can't help but agree. With any luck this challenge will bring Jim'll Paint It back to basics so that when a complicated one does come along it stands out from the crowd. It also means I'll get loads more pictures done and make lots more people happy.

So go for it. Stick your 5 word requests below or on the wall as usual. Thanks!

Michael Cook

Michael Cook: I looked up this new film, The Purge and I have to admit the concept is unusual. In order to maintain a country with a 1% unemployment and nearly no crime, all citizens have a day once per year where all crime is allowed with no legal ramifications.
So given the chance, if you could commit any crime you wanted without fear of being arrested, what would it be?
For the record, mine would probably being stealing cars and crashing them through glass store fronts. Don't know why, but after playing Saint's Row the Third, it was something I found the game lacked. Plus it's really cool watching glass shatter.
