My Ireland Box:
A Gathering on the Blaskets: an islandman returns We have just returned from the magical Gathering event at the Blasket Centre that was held this evening. We met some fabulous people from Springfield Massachusetts. We are delighted that a MyIrelandBox was presented to a number of Blasket Island descendants from Springfield and our own Minister for the Arts, Jimmy Deenihan. We hope to visit Springfield very soon!
What was extra special about this Gathering was the launch of Dr Michael Carney's memoirs : "From the Great Blasket to America - The Last Memoir by an Islander". Born on the Great Blasket Island in 1920, at age 93 he is now the oldest living native of the island. He emigrated to Springfield MA and explained his love for both Ireland and America by saying ‘it’s like loving both parents’.
He never forgot his heritage and spoke tonight to us all about how important it is to hold on to it “I always believed that people should maintain their heritage, ideals and culture. If you don’t, you might as well lose yourself,” Carney said. “I’ve never forgotten it. It’s something that’s within me.”

For me... such is the explanation of the experience of J.J. Abram's Star Trek. So true was it to the characters, the Star Trek universe and the intentions of Gene Roddenberry that it felt monumental. The familiar at levels of intensity so bright that it felt BETTER in some ways than the initial experience.
You may not be a Trekker and, if so, you may still delight in the pure fun of the romp and the execution of a story well told technically and aesthetically. But if you ARE a Trekker... if Jim Kirk is that part of YOUR spirit that wants to do what it feels is right even when the rules make no room for it... if Spock is that part of you that tries to think its way through situations according to Hoyle... if McCoy is that part of you that is indignant at the insult even being IN some situations... if Scotty rings true with some part of you that loves technology - but loves his friends more... Then this movie will leave you richly satisfied.

There's a part of this video that would've been perfect to reference in Into Darkness, but they didn't despite the entire movie being a reference... Probably partly because McCoy has such a reduced role in this new reboot. What happened to the Big Three? McCoy's been replaced by Uhura, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing except almost all her lines are related to her relationship with Spock. Talk about a step down for her character. Spock and McCoy in jail.
