Jude Garrison

Jude Garrison: WHEW! That's enough to scare me...and I wrote it. lol. Excerpt of Eclipse of a Wild Rose.

......A fire burned brightly against the darkness of night, and somewhere in the distance, there was the sound of beating drums......Suddenly, a golden ring of fire fell from the sky, glistening in the reflection of moonlight that peeked through the trees. Sara’s heart began to tremor. She tried to run. Her legs simply wouldn’t move. The vision in white with the beautiful face appeared before her again and spoke, and this time the words were crystal clear. "Magic is everywhere. You just have to open your eyes."

Discover Riverside State Park

729705283740159 Discover Riverside State Park:         These photos were taken at Goldendale Observatory State Park.

11:01PM - First Contact Umbra

This photo was taken at 11:01 PDT, just as the Moon was fully entering Earth's Penumbra and making first contact with the Umbra. Note the obvious reddening on the shadow side and the interesting bluish terminator separating light from darkness. These colors are all resultant from the same mechanism that gives rise to blue skies and pretty sunsets; refraction and diffraction of sunlight by Earth's atmosphere. Finally, note the curvature of Earth's shadow on the Moon, clearly demonstrating the great size disparity between the two space bodies.

1:18AM - End of Totality

This photo was taken at 1:18AM PDT, just 7 minutes prior to the end of Totality. Under such an exceptionally dark eclipse, this image required a 10 second exposure at moderate ISO; unheard of settings under normal lunar photography circumstances. From the Moon's perspective at this time, Earth would have appeared as an enormous ring of fire, the light of every sunset and sunrise filtering past the planet and painting the lunar surface red.

10152786689004616 Lelybeth Valleno Lopez: Timeline Photos     Dust off your binoculars, or for you serious astronomy enthusiasts, get ready to show off your telescopes – it’s about to be the first eclipse of the year! A total eclipse is when the earth passes exactly between the full moon and the sun. But this one will be a bit more rare, as it will be one of a series of four total eclipses without a partial eclipse in between, also known as a lunar tetrad, and lately, what people are calling a Blood Moon.

The Blood Moon will be visible to the naked eye on at around 9:55 p.m. on April 14, and continue overnight into April 15th. (If the latter date rings a faint bell, it's because it also happens to be tax day.) Total eclipse doesn’t begin until 12:08 a.m. on the 15th, moving into maximum eclipse at 12:46 a.m. The whole event will last for about 3 hrs and 35 minutes.

Besides lunar eclipses being a celestial phenomenon in it of themselves, Blood Moon earns its special name due the red color created when sunlight filtered around the earth’s atmosphere hits the moon. The moon will look like your favorite sunrise or sunset, appearing dusty red/orange. It also has a spiritual meaning to some Christians, who believe it's a message from God that the End-Times prophecy will come true.

The remaining three eclipses in the tetrad will happen October 8, April 8, 2015, and September 28, 2015. All will be visible in all parts of the US, but the upcoming “ring of fire” solar eclipse, happening on April 29, is limited to a small part of Antarctica.

Lucky for the entire Bay Area, we have a prime spot to gaze upon the Blood Moon. The Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland already has tickets available to the rare event. http://www.thebolditalic.com/articles/4779-the-rare-blood-moon-is-coming

Michael O'Connor

Michael O'Connor: Musicians at The Dresden Perform "Ring of Fire" Outside During...     So this went down last night during the lunar eclipse...     After ROCKO WHEELER played an outstanding music set at The Dresden, everyone from the restaurant went outside to witness the lunar eclipse. Rocko and other musicians from that evening came out with their instruments to play impromptu moon-related songs; it was quite magical. At the request of several listeners, I captured a tidbit of this moment on my cell phone (I'm rather opposed to busting out my phone while enjoying music like this). It doesn't capture the warm vibe that the musicians put forth, and the liveliness that the whole crowd felt as the music and moon worked oh-so-well together.

Kelly Neal Pittman

Kelly Neal Pittman: Look: 1st Total Lunar Eclipse of 2014 Wows Stargazers     Later this month, from April 28 to April 29, the sun will turn into a "ring of fire" during an annular eclipse. It's possible, however, that the celestial sight will only be visible for penguins. The solar eclipse's totality will only be visible over an uninhabited part of Antarctica. This year's total lunar eclipses and solar eclipses are among the most promising stargazing events of 2014.

The next total lunar eclipse of 2014 will occur on Oct. 8, followed by another on April 8, 2015, and the last total lunar eclipse of the current tetrad on Sept. 28, 2015.
